Unlocking Guyana’s Potential: Trade with North America
Guyana is rich in natural and human resources yet has struggled economically for decades. However, the recent oil and gas discoveries off Guyana’s coast could help transform its economy. An equally important key to unlocking Guyana’s potential lies in expanding trade ties with North America.

The United States and Canada are Guyana’s largest trading partners, but current trade levels remain low. With the right policies and strategies, these trade relationships could grow significantly.

There are several areas for potential growth:

Agricultural Exports: Guyana has highly fertile land and a favorable climate for agriculture. It currently exports sugar, rice, and coconut products to North America but could expand exports of tropical fruits and vegetables. With demand for organic and non-GMO foods growing in the U.S. and Canada, Guyanese farmers could tap into this lucrative market.

Natural Resources: Currently, Guyana exports gold and bauxite to North America. But with the new oil finds, Guyanese crude oil could become a major export in the coming years. Further exploration of other mineral wealth could also unlock new resource exports.

Tourism: Guyana has beautiful natural attractions like dense rainforests, waterfalls, and untouched beaches. However, North American tourism to Guyana still needs to grow. Increasing flights and marketing Guyana as an ecotourism destination could boost valuable tourism dollars.

Business and Investment: The Guyanese diaspora in North America represents an untapped resource for investment and business partnerships. Connecting them to opportunities in Guyana could drive capital inflows and joint ventures between Guyanese and North American companies.

The Guyana and North American Trade Association can play an important role by facilitating business partnerships, organizing trade missions and expos, providing market data and insights, and advocating for policies that promote trade and investment flows. By working together, the potential for win-win cooperation and mutually beneficial trade can help drive sustainable economic growth and prosperity on both sides.
